Belt ranks and promotions

How your rank is recorded, and why it follows you from gym to gym.

Your gym records promotions

Only gym admins can record a promotion. When your coach promotes you, an admin issues the new belt or stripe from the gym's admin portal, and it shows in your app right away. If you were promoted on the mat but the app still shows your old rank, ask the front desk or your coach to record it.

One rank per martial art

OLM keeps a separate rank for each discipline you train: Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, Muay Thai, karate, taekwondo, wrestling and more. A judo black belt who starts BJJ keeps the judo rank, and their BJJ rank starts where their new gym places them.

Your rank moves with you

Ranks belong to you, not to a gym. If you join another gym on OLM, your ranks, promotion history, journal and check-ins come with you. Your new gym sees the rank you hold and can promote you from there.

Your promotion history

Every promotion is kept as a record: the rank you moved from and to, the gym that issued it, who promoted you, and the date. Records are never edited after the fact, so your history stays accurate as you move between gyms.
